Born in Dijon, Jean-Baptiste-Philibert Vaillant, after graduating from the École polytechnique, during the period of the first empire took part in the Russian campaign and the battle of Waterloo. Later, after serving with distinction at the siege of Algiers (July 1830), he helped develop the plans for the fortification of Paris. Minister of war (1854), he was made a marshal by napoléon III and became minister of the emperor's household (1860-70). After the surrender at Sedan (September 1870) and the fall of the second empire, he immigrated to Spain (September 1870-1871).
